Russia Green Lights $65 Billion
Siberia-Alaska Rail
by Andrew Michler
In what could certainly be one of the boldest infrastructure developments ever announced, the Russian Government has given the go-ahead to build a transcontinental railway linking Siberia with North America.
The massive undertaking would traverse the Bering Strait with the world’s longest tunnel – a project twice the length of the Chunnel between England and France.
The $65 billion project aims to feed North America with raw goods from the Siberian interior and beyond, but it could also provide a key link to developing a robust renewable energy transmission corridor that feeds wind and tidal power across vast distances while linking a railway network across 3/4 of the Northern Hemisphere.

2016 Best American Restaurant
on Yelp in each state
10-18-2016
ALASKA
Little Mermaid
Homer
Alaska's best restaurant on Yelp is Little Mermaid, which serves pizza, burgers and seafood in Homer.
We asked Yelp how to find the best restaurant in each state (and Washington, D.C.) and the platform used an algorithm combining users' ratings and reviews (and excluding chains) to give us these standout eateries.
The leader in your state may surprise you or simply reveal what's commonly reviewed on the platform — like the five sushi spots that made the list.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, South Carolina's top restaurant serves southern fare, Tennessee's top spot is a newer and nationally known eatery in Nashville, and Wyoming's winner is a well known wine bar in Jackson.
Though one may not have guessed that Kansas' best restaurant is a sushi bar, Georgia's standout is a vegan restaurant, and Minnesota's top spot is Vietnamese — all the more reason to check them out.
Interestingly, New Hampshire's standout eatery is an actual farm (with more than 20 pancake flavors) and the best eatery in the nation's capital is Ethiopian (though locals know that secret)

2016 Best Barbecue Joints in All 50 States
10-19-2016
The key to great barbecue is to keep it simple: meat slow-smoked over wood. America’s barbecue scene is diverse, ranging from roadside shacks to full restaurants serving craft beer and brisket.
Many barbecue joints create an admixture of styles from key cities like Memphis, Kansas City, and St. Louis, and states like Texas and the Carolinas.
And even though the meat is the star of the show, what would a good barbecue meal be without a few solid sides?
Here's our roundup of the best barbecue joint in every state.

2016 Best Steak
in Every State
The steakhouse is one of America’s most enduring and versatile culinary creations.
Steakhouses range from leather-and-mahogany upscale to sawdust-and-Budweiser downscale, but they all exist for the same reason: to satisfy our insatiable craving for a well-cooked piece of meat.
And sure enough, from coast to coast, from Alaska to Hawaii, there’s no shortage of truly great steakhouses out there.
We’ve tracked down the best steakhouses in every state and the District of Columbia.

Simon & Seafort’s Saloon & Grill, Anchorage
Anchorage
An Anchorage favorite since 1978, this landmark isn’t just the best steakhouse in Alaska, it’s also one of the most picturesque in America, offering stunning views of the Alaska Range and Mount Susitna.
As for the steaks, they’re USDA Prime, and though you may have some trouble choosing between a grilled smoked sirloin, a char-grilled filet mignon, and their signature rock salt roasted prime rib (available in three sizes), you’ll definitely go home happy.

2016 Best Bar in Every State
8/11/2016
Alaska
Salty Dawg Saloon
Homer
The Salty Dawg Saloon is housed in a late-nineteenth-century building, one of the original cabins from the town site in Homer.
Opened in 1957, the low-ceiling bar (tall folks have to duck to enter) is an institution.
The fun décor includes life rings, dollars, and endless bric-a-brac (for years, the eclectic curios even included a prosthetic leg, until someone stole it to take it back to its owner).
Ask the friendly bar staff, who have been tending the bar for decades, for signature cocktails like the Salty Dog (vodka — the original was made with gin — and grapefruit juice with a salted rim) and the Duck Fart (a shot purportedly originating in Kodiak, compossed of Kahlúa, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Crown Royal).

The World’s Longest Cruise
Hits All 7 Continents in 357 Days
10-17-2016
The new “ World of Travel” package from the UK’s Mundy Cruising is the pinnacle of around-the-world journeys, clocking in at 357 days that will take you to all seven continents, according to Condé Nast Traveler.
The trip leaves from Miami in January and sets sail around South America, stopping in Rio, cruising up the Amazon, taking in Machu Picchu, and more.
From there, you’ll travel to Athens and wind your way through the Mediterranean to the UK and through the North Sea and the Baltic all the way to Russia.
By late August, you’ll be sailing from Vancouver up to Alaska before going through Central America over to the Atlantic and to New England and Quebec.
October will bring you to Australia, and in December, you’ll spend 33 nights traveling around Africa.
Antarctica Cruise's
After you check out Antarctica, you’ll travel to Singapore, where you’ll set sail for China and Indonesia.
The trip ends in May 2018.
Each leg of the journey is separate, giving you time to fly home and repack for the next leg of the journey or to travel on your own before meeting your ship at the next continent.
The South American and European parts of the cruise are the longest, at 94 and 92 nights each, respectively.
The cost comes in at around $155,000, including business-class flights to your departure points and back home after each leg.

Why You Should Cruise the Inside Passage
When most people think of cruising, more often than not they picture a white sand beach in The Caribbean.
The people are hot, the waters are warm, and the rum is always cold, sounds great right?
While these cruises are some of the most popular, there’s a different type of vacation that occupies a special place in my heart: an Alaskan cruise.

Christmas Cruise
Reasons to Spend Your Christmas Vacation on a Cruise
The holidays can be hectic.
From shopping and entertaining to packing up the kids for a trip to Grandma’s, the stress of the season can leave you wishing you could sail away to some exotic locale.
A Christmas cruise offers the opportunity to do just that.
Taking a cruise during the holidays is not only a welcome change of pace, but with all the gifts, entertaining and travel that you would otherwise spend money on, a family cruise could cost you as much or less than going about your normal routine.
For example, an eight-day Christmas cruise to Mexico from Los Angeles for a family of four starts at $3,740, according to a representative at Princess Cruises.
On the other hand, an eight-day trip for a family of four to New York City, with a comparable level of accommodations, food and entertainment, comes in at a steep $8,990, according to the same representative.
There Are Plenty of Cruise Deals
"Given that you're getting three hot sit-down meals a day — plus pretty much unlimited snacks — that's a pretty amazing deal.”
He did caution that you’re less likely to find a great deal on a Disney Christmas cruise.
“It's kind of a unique experience, and they charge accordingly,” said Munsil.
Johnson recommended booking early in order to get the cabin and itinerary of your choice.
But if you wait until the last minute, sometimes you can still find a great deal on a site like Expedia.

Most Expensive Restaurant
Most of us have our own definitions of what makes a restaurant expensive.
For some, any restaurant with entrées that average more than $20 are considered expensive; others reserve that description for places where main courses pass the $40 mark.
But what’s the most expensive restaurant on earth?
There’s a restaurant in Ibiza, Spain that makes other exorbitantly priced restaurants — like New York City’s Masa and Paris’ Le Meurice, where tabs can stretch beyond $500 per person — look like child’s play.
At Sublimotion, which opened last year, a meal costs 1,500 euros ($1581 USD) per person.
Located at an undisclosed “magical point on the island” at the Ibiza Hard Rock Hotel, this avant-garde restaurant seats only 12 guests at a time, and the restaurant’s goal is to be “where the best Spanish avant-garde cuisine and the most surprising and magical show come together in a single unique experience.”
The restaurant refers to its dining room, where guests enjoy 20 courses at a single large table, as a “microenvironment.” Computers control the lighting, scents, music, patterns on the tables, scenic views on the walls, and even the humidity.
Paco Roncero, the chef and visionary behind the restaurant, has been awarded with two Michelin stars, so you know that the main event — the food — will be good as well.
But is the experience worth 1,500 euros?
We’ll let you be the judge of that.
All we know is that Sublimotion is the most expensive restaurant in the world.
